English 111 Brushup

Hey guys, if I mention something in a blog post or in class that references English 111 curriculum, I'll post it here in case you need a refresher. If there's something you'd like to see added, just let me know

Appeals: Ways to convince your audience that you are right and your ideas are awesome. Generally speaking, there are three: logos, pathos, ethos (lpe)
Logos: Using logic. This newscast uses logic correctly (in building an argument that the signs are racist), but racism itself is a good example of broken logic. (Also, Phoenix is the worst city on earth.)
Pathos: Using emotion. The Sarah McLachlan animal cruelty commercials are a perfect example:

Ethos: Using authority. Celebrity endorsements are a good example of using someone's credibility as a visible member of the public to shill something. This commercial also presents another kind of ethos, that of "the everyday person." Sure, Ashton Kutcher has ethos because he's famous, but, as this commercial wants us to believe, he also has ethos because he just charmingly goes around goofing at wedding and taking photos, just like us!

This website seems a little shady, but they've got a good list of everyday examples of lpe.
